About Odisha (ଓଡ଼ିଶା)
Odisha (ଓଡ଼ିଶା), formerly known as Kalinga(କଳିଙ୍ଗ), is a culturally and historically significant state located on the eastern coast of
India along the Bay of Bengal. In ancient times, Kalinga was a powerful kingdom that played a major role in Indian history.
The famous Kalinga War fought in 261 BCE between Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan Empire and the Kalinga kingdom was a turning point —
it led Ashoka to embrace Buddhism and spread its message across Asia. Later, the region was also known as Utkala, a name mentioned
in India’s national anthem, symbolizing its rich cultural heritage. Today, Odisha comprises 30 districts, including Khordha, Cuttack,
Puri, Sambalpur, Ganjam, Sundargarh, and Koraput. The capital city Bhubaneswar is known as the "Temple City of India" due to its many
ancient temples, including the famous Lingaraj Temple. Cuttack, the former capital, is a historic city known for its silver filigree
work and cultural legacy. Puri is one of the Char Dhams and is renowned for the sacred Jagannath Temple and the world-famous Rath
Yatra. Other major cities like Rourkela, known for its steel plant, Sambalpur, famous for Sambalpuri sarees, and Berhampur, known
as the "Silk City," contribute to the state’s economic and cultural diversity. Odisha’s culture is deeply rooted in its classical
dance Odissi, one of India’s oldest surviving dance forms. Traditional arts such as Pattachitra paintings, Pipili appliqué work,
and stone carvings reflect the state’s artistic excellence. The people of Odisha celebrate festivals like Rath Yatra, Durga Puja,
Raja Parba, and Makara Sankranti with great devotion and enthusiasm. The local cuisine is simple yet unique, with famous dishes
like Pakhala Bhata (fermented rice with curd), Dalma (lentils cooked with vegetables), and sweets like Chhena Poda and Rasagola,
the latter of which has received a GI tag recognizing its Odia origin. The state is home to many natural and architectural wonders,
including the Konark Sun Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Chilika Lake (Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon),
Hirakud Dam (one of the world’s longest dams), and wildlife sanctuaries like Similipal, Satkosia, and Nandankanan.
With its blend of ancient legacy, cultural vibrancy, spiritual depth, and natural beauty, Odisha truly lives up to its
nickname: “The Soul of Incredible India.”
